She invited us over for Movie Night: Gadjo Dilo, full of Gypsy music and dancing and flirting and colorful headscarves. There were bowls of popcorn seasoned with truffle oil, and accordion and fiddle musical interludes when the Netflix stream puttered out on us.
Then, after the movie, she stoked the bonfire, and we circled round with tambourines, baptizing ourselves with smoke.
The girls took portraits by firelight.
Then we lined up, boy-girl, boy-girl, and she taught us old dances, which we did by the light of the full moon filtering through the clouds next to a blossoming fruit tree: the weaving, mesmerizing Chain Dance, and the wild Irish lightning-fast-partner-switch-up Strip The Willow. Someone said that the fruit on that tree was going to be very, very plentiful this year.
I went to bed late and woke up with very sore dancing muscles the next morning. It was well worth it.
Big thanks to Bluebird and Dylan, who made the magic happen.

Bluebird. Of course. Magical.

I'm intrigued! I will definitely have to check out this movie. I am actually part Roma myself. I know that the "gypsy" people are the victims of a lot of oppression in Europe and that their life isn't all romantic and carefree, but it still fascinates me!

What do you envision when you think of a 'Gypsy'? You know...what would the picture in your mind's eye look like if you tried to describe it? When I close my eyes, I see a clearing in the woods. The clearing is carpeted by a thick mossy ground cover, surrounded by trees, next to a river. Wild thyme grows underfoot and sweetens the air. Evening has fallen and the moon in the sky is a full round glowing orb. Oh how I adore a full moon, so full of feminine energy and promising mystery. The light that shines down from a full moon is the most magnificent light of all, because it illuminates the earth in such a magical way. The moonlight falls on the ripples of the water and shines like glitter in the night. One can easily find their way down the wooded trail to the Gypsy Camp when the full moon offers to lead the way.
