I have been meaning to tell you all about an adventure I had recently-- I saw my first Roller Derby! I am not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I am hooked on the Derby. I was a bit suspicious of all the "hype" (like the hubbub around the Drew Barrymore-directed film Whip It, which I since watched, and actually liked), but this lived up to it and MORE!
We were at the roller rink to begin with cause it was a friend's birthday party-- yes, big girls skate too-- and you bet I was out there on the rink. I grew up on rollerskates and I still think they are one of the greatest inventions of the last century. I mean, what else makes you feel like you are dancing and flying at the same time? Here's Maroo, the birthday girl, the the center, and my friend Nacoa on the left:
I must confess I am a bad blogger, and I don't have a single picture of the outfit I actually skated in, which was a purple spandex ice-skating outfit from the 1980s, with a silver sequined lightening bolt on front. You'll have to just imagine it for now.
Now I did try to get a picture of the Derby in action, but, well, it is kind of pathetic: they all skated past too fast to catch! You probably aren't going to believe me that this is a team of bad-ass girls in cool outfits, skating for all they are worth:
The home team was the Sacred City Derby Girls, and they were amazing. The Varsity match against the brutal Undead Betties was the closest and most thrilling. The home team lost (just barely), but not for lack of me screaming my head off for them.
Okay, this is Hollywood, but in looks at least it's not that far from the truth, and you need a better idea of the fierce action on the rink. This is from Whip It, of course, featuring the "Hurl Scouts"!
In case you haven't heard, Roller Derby has taken off (again- it was big in the 70s) all over the country. If you are a Sacramento native, check out the event schedule for Sacred City here. Maroo is trying out for the team next month, and I really hope she gets in so I can make a sign that says "Maroo-cifer" (you have to have an awesome Derby Name, and she has the best one ever) and wave it around at every match!
Meanwhile, all you Sac and Roseville friends are invited to join me and Chris on the rink, cause we are planning on hitting it as often as humanly possible from now on. Though I am not quite up for the bone-breaking job of being a Derby Girl, I am an aspiring Roller Dancing Queen!
Derby has just started taking off here in the ACT - and several of my girlfriends are in the Fresh Meat intake for this year. I had the same problem trying to get snaps for my Blog - the girls are just too fast on their skates :"(
I wanted to try out, but it's a girl-only sport apparently.
Oh well.
Xx

That sounds like so much fun! I used to have all my birthday parties at the skating rink when I was a kid :D I'd love to see an actual roller derby sometime.
I am imagining your skating outfit and it is glorious!!!
