I'm a little fed up with my winter wardrobe. I am not much of a cold-weather dresser, though I tried to work on it this year; ultimately I end up wearing the same three things every day. It doesn''t help that our house is so "quirky" (in some ways good-quirky, in someways bad-quirky, in some ways just plain weird) that our closet is actually located in the bathroom, where the tiny window also serves as a cat entrance/exit and lets in a cold draft all night long. (Much to my surprise, I have become one of those cat-centric people, aka, a Cat Servant, since adopting Mouchie and Zooey. I put up with any discomfort for their sake.) As a result, it is freezing in the bathroom, all of my clothes are freezing (if extraordinarily well ventilated) and when it's below 40 degrees at 8am, you just want to get the whole dressing thing over and done with as quickly as possible.
I did a closet re-organization this weekend and discovered that while I only have a few winter dresses that I love, I have dozens of spring/summer frocks waiting for warm weather. Most of my cotton-y spring dresses just don't hang right if I try to layer underneath them, so they will have to keep waiting. I did thrift this cool dress recently that works with my Official Underlayer Armor (extra long tank top, tucked into tights so my kidneys don't get cold, with a long-sleeved close-fitting black shirt over it all), and I snapped a pic before going off to play some music at a friend's house!
Dress (it's actually gold and silver, see close-up): thrifted
Tights: Nordstrom's (the first place I head when I feel rich- best sock department ever)
Bow: handy piece of black lace, thrifted
Boots: my winter go-to boots, Crossroads Clothing, Berkeley
Jacket: my latest purchase, from the amazing Freestyle Clothing Exchange in Citrus Heights-- I was shocked to find that it was a Target brand! The leather is so soft and it feels so well made. I have never had a leather jacket before, and I am excited to introduce this new element into my wardrobe. I think I'll especially like it when I am going out to play a show, as it seems to help rally my spirits for all the loading in, soundchecking, and pre-show socializing if I feel "tough". (I have dealt-- pretty darn well-- with crippling shyness during my life, and it can be provoked by situations like this, so I am entitled to a bit of a shield.)
It's kind of a strange mix of elements, I guess, but it felt like "me" yesterday. When I have the time/energy to pick my outfit carefully, I love to explore who I "am" on a certain day. It's very cheap therapy, I tell you. What color am I drawn to? What shapes? What fabrics? And I needed a little Sasha-centric moment on this Sunday night, after a weekend that-- for no good reason-- just ended up being a little off-kilter. We had canceled our Friday night plans because the weather predicted snow at just about the hour our friend's band was going to take the stage, and we have had more than enough scary experiences driving home in bad weather (we live higher than Nevada City, so it can be raining down there when it is snowing heavily at our house, even though it's just a ten minute drive-- these are the Sierra foothills, after all!). Saturday night we were going to go out after the movies, but a week of not sleeping enough caught up with me and suddenly I had to go home right away-- but I felt totally conflicted about it. So I was hoping Sunday night was going to make up for all of this, and that we would get to see friends and feel connected. I thought the silver and gold felt very "space superhero", which was the antithesis of my weekend up until that point.
Come to find out, it turned into the sweetest little jam/party at our friends house, and I did end up feeling filled pleasantly to the brim... and a little like a space superhero (especially as I tried out their space-robot-oscillating Moog!) Taking the time to get dressed for my evening certainly helped put me in the right frame of mind to have a great time. To me, is what clothes are for-- to lift you up, and to help bring out different aspects of your personality. I always end up having a blast when I am wearing gold-- maybe I should find some kind of gold turban and wear it 24/7? It's a thought.
I LOVE YOUR NEW JACKET <3 <3 <3
I think everyone should own one incredible leather jacket that fits them perfectly, and this is that for you.
I actually just purchased a black leather jacket from eBay, by my favourite Menswear designer of all time (John Bartlett) and I am waiting on it to arrive...
Also love the almost Bionic feel to the dress.
Xx
