It was a cold, dark winter this year, and to be honest, I was starting to lose faith in my powers as a photographer, and the workability of my camera (a very nice, and very basic, point-and-shoot Canon). This was compounded by the fact that between working at my day job all week long, and trying to navigate a rare rainless window, I often had to shoot during harsh mid-day light or other non-ideal conditions.
Several people had mentioned to me that early morning light was best for photos, but this information confused me-- where I live, on a steep hill that blocks the sunrise, by the time there is enough light to shoot with in the morning, it is already too harsh, and some of my worst photo attempts came from these hours. Well, clearly, I needed a lesson in topography, because things are entirely different 20 minutes down the road! Big thanks to my friend Zach for suggesting that I try Bridgeport, one of my very favorite places, in the early a.m.
I am not an early riser by nature (understatement of the century-- I actually prefer to wake up about 10:30 a.m.) but I got my booty out of bed and down to Bridgeport by 8:30 a.m., where I found a miraculous world of liquid-honey light. I am going to have to start earlier next time, since the sun lost the mellow quality by about 11 a.m., but I did stay on and found some open shade to continue shooting in. I like these pictures so much, and I had such a good time being outdoors all day with the birds and the butterflies and the very friendly State Park staff (who all were very interested in what I was doing, and quite supportive) that I think I might use Bridgeport as my official Astral Boutique backdrop all summer long! Hope you enjoy.
you're so lovely! i don't blame the park staff for being supportive. love, heather
